The new Toyota Hilux: what has changed
The ninth-generation Hilux was launched to the motoring press on Namibian roads in June. Here is what is new.
Toyota launched the ninth-generation Hilux to motoring journalists in Namibia in June 2026, driving from Windhoek to Walvis Bay and out towards Sesriem on gravel, corrugations and sand.
It is a big update rather than an all-new bakkie. It keeps the ladder-frame chassis, and at launch every model uses the 2.8 GD-6 turbodiesel with a six-speed automatic gearbox. The top Legend models add a 48V mild-hybrid system.
Inside, there is a new digital cockpit and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Reviewers said the ride on gravel is much better than the old Hilux, which was a common complaint from owners.
In South Africa the range starts with seven models (Xtra Cab and Double Cab, in SRX, Raider and Legend trims). Toyota South Africa says a single cab follows towards the end of 2026, and smaller engines, including the 2.4, in 2027.
What it means for used-car buyers: when a new model arrives, more owners trade in the old one. That can mean more previous-generation Hiluxes on the used market. Ask a Toyota dealer in Namibia which new models and prices are available here.
