Choosing a fuel type
Petrol or diesel? What to check before you choose.
Fuel prices change every month
- In Namibia the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy reviews petrol and diesel prices every month.
- Look at the latest announcement before you work out your monthly fuel costs.
- In October 2026, diesel cost a little more per litre than petrol at the coast (Walvis Bay).
Diesel comes in different grades
- Namibian filling stations sell diesel 50ppm and diesel 10ppm.
- Some modern diesel engines need a cleaner grade. Check the owner's manual or ask the dealer which diesel the car needs.
Think about how you drive
- Mostly town driving? Compare the fuel use (litres per 100 km) of the cars you like.
- Long trips, gravel roads or towing? Ask the dealer how the car handles that, and check the service history.
Frequently asked questions
Is diesel cheaper than petrol in Namibia?
Not always. In October 2026 at Walvis Bay, diesel 50ppm cost N$27.86 a litre and petrol cost N$26.58. Prices are reviewed every month, so check the latest announcement.
What is the difference between diesel 50ppm and diesel 10ppm?
The number shows how much sulphur is in the diesel (parts per million). Diesel 10ppm has less sulphur than diesel 50ppm. Namibian filling stations sell both.
Which diesel grade should I put in my car?
Check the owner's manual or ask the dealer which grade the engine needs. When 10ppm diesel came to Namibia, the Ministry said newer vehicle models were the reason more people wanted cleaner diesel.
Is a diesel worth it if I mostly drive in town?
It depends on how far you drive. Compare the fuel use (litres per 100 km) of the cars you like and the price of each fuel. Then work out your monthly fuel cost for each car.
Is the fuel price the same in every town?
The Ministry announces the official price for Walvis Bay. It says prices in the rest of the country are adjusted by the same change.
